Many writers have noted that pragmatism is a central feature of the American character, whether this is to be attributed to the mindset of emigrants to the New World or to the conditions of life they found and developed there. Money for laboratories was lavishly allocated-they were always more available for building buildings than for the people who taught in them-and the visible successes of modern science gave it great prestige as an academic subject.
