I started my PhD at NUS in August 2015. My research focus is to investigate the sustainability of agricultural production. With increases in human population, more food needs to be produced to satisfy demand. I am interested in quantifying the spatial the trade-offs between feeding humans and protecting biodiversity. My current research aims to explore the impacts of agricultural expansion on forests in Myanmar. I’ll visit University of Queensland from 16th May to 9th June and will sit on the Conservation Decision-Making course. During the visit, I hope to interact with the researchers there and learn more about conservation planning techniques. I’m also looking forward to finding new research and collaboration opportunities related to conservation.    ...

I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences of the National University of Singapore. I run the BioEcon Lab. We develop (mostly spatial) bio-economic models to support evidence-based policy making in conservation science and biosecurity. Specific research topics of the lab are: tropical forests conservation, deforestation modelling, trade-offs between agriculture and ecosystem services and eco-health modelling. I will be visiting The University of Queensland with Yuchen and Will from the 16th to the 20th of May. I plan to meet with Oscar Venter, Hugh Possingham and James Watson under a new collaboration. I hope to be able to meet more researchers at CBCS and look forward to exciting discussions.

I am a PhD student in the BioEcon lab at NUS and my main research interests are related to how economics, international trade and agriculture influence land use decisions and patterns of land use change in the tropics. I am currently working on projects related to protected area effectiveness, oil palm in Borneo, commodity chain drivers of deforestation and wildlife trade. In Australia I hope to learn more about using MARXAN for protected area selection, and its underlying mechanics. I would like to incorporate these things into my own research regarding protected area downgrading, downsizing and degazettement (PADDD). I think it would be a great opportunity to expand my own knowledge, discuss ideas and learn new techniques that will help me develop as a researcher. Dates of visit: 16 ...
