Dr Sylvaine Giakoumi

Research Fellow

Email: sylvaine@aegean.gr

Location: Goddard Building 8, School of Biological Sciences

sylvaine Medium

Sylvaine is a postdoctoral researcher working on marine conservation planning in the Mediterranean Sea (outgoing postdoctoral fellowship co-financed by the European Union and the Greek State). She will be conducting her research at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions, University of Queensland and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research in Greece. She completed her PhD thesis in marine community ecology and marine conservation planning at the University of the Aegean in 2010. After attaining an Endeavour Research Award in 2009 she visited the Spatial Ecology Lab, University of Queensland and Prof. Hugh Possingham supervised the last part of her PhD thesis.

Sylvaine’s research interests include: marine spatial planning and prioritization of conservation actions in data poor areas; marine community ecology including the impacts of invasive species on native communities; and cumulative human impacts on food webs. Her study area is currently the Mediterranean Sea, where apart from being involved in advancing marine conservation planning at a Mediterranean basin scale (https://sites.google.com/site/conservationmediterraneanws1/), she is actively involved in initiatives for the establishment of marine protected areas in Greece (http://www.cousteaudivers.org/emails/view/january-ewsletter).
